Residence of Lillias Paterson between 1902 and 1927 please
« on: Saturday 23 February 19 08:21 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for the residence of..
Lillias Paterson who was b 24 APR 1879 Dunbartonshire, St Jas, and Died 26 dec 1943 Luton Bedfordshire, England,

where did she live between 1902 (living at Hillholme, with her dad when he died, he is buried with Ann at St Mary's Church Shephall, Stevenage, Hertfordshire. ) and 1927 when she reappeared at her brother, Sam's Newbury Farm Hertfordshire? That's 25 years and she remained a spinster.  Did she ever have a child which has never been mentioned? Is there some way to search for that information.  Thanks in advance.

Good morning all, thank you for your contributions.  YES sorry my typo.  She died in Luton not Luxton, my error.  I have all that correct information.  I also have census from 1927  when she was living with brother Sam and sister Jane.  Thanks.   I wondered if she could have been in Ireland, but can't find document to confirm this. I also wonder if she went to USA or Canada where other family may have been living? a real puzzle as I can't search USA.     JJen, what does 'resealed' mean in regards to her probate please?

Hi Suzard,   I have her in 1939 at Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England with Samual?  Her Dad and brothers were in Minster, Kent in 1901 ( I believe).

You have her on electoral register, not census after 1927.  It is quite likely that she did not appear on these registers prior to that due to the 'qualifications' needed to vote.

Representation of the People Act 1918
In 1918 the Representation of the People Act was passed which allowed women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification to vote.

The same Act abolished property and other restrictions for men, and extended the vote to virtually all men over the age of 21. Additionally, men in the armed forces could vote from the age of 19. The electorate increased from eight to 21 million, but there was still huge inequality between women and men.

Equal Franchise Act 1928
It was not until the Equal Franchise Act of 1928 that women over 21 were able to vote and women finally achieved the same voting rights as men.
