James TERRY: born 1837 Fareham
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 14:57 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

James TERRY, born 1837 Fareham, was the son of James, a Carpenter, and Elizabeth TERRY.  In  1841 the family was living in Henry Street, Alverstoke.    Other than a period of imprisonment between 07/1850 and 12/1855 I can find no further substantive details for him, only possibilities (death, for instance).

Can anyone help please?

Suz,

He was back in circulation after 12/1855.....the sentence of transportation having been overturned.

Hi,

It looks like he joined the Royal Navy,

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7874909

The DOB matches the one given on his baptism. :)

I lose him after this though.

Thank You Daisy,

You have been an enormous help identifying his enlistment in the Royal Navy.   There must be records of his service somewhere............the next challenge ??? ::)

For now,

Looking at the preview of his record it looks like the Captain signing the form was MAITLAND and the ship could be Excellent. This could be refer to Thomas MAITLAND,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Maitland,_11th_Earl_of_Lauderdale

who was the commanding officer of the Gunnery School HMS Excellent, a land based training school in Portsmouth,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Excellent_(shore_establishment)

I'm not sure but I think to research his records in this time period you need to know which ships he served on, unfortunately I can't see any listed on the preview of the form.

I hope you don't mind but I'm adding a link to your other post about James TERRY so others can see what has already been found :)

Good Morning Daisypetal,

Thank you for all your excellent research, I am extremely grateful.

As you will notice MaxD has confirmed your findings, much to my embarrassment in research terms...... :-[ :-[

Take care,

Hi Bac3,

I think this is a good example of how helpful RootsChat can be, everyone can add something from their different knowledge.  :)

I would like to say a big thank you to MaxD   :)

I hadn't found those records before, I often get lost in the NA site. They will be very helpful in my research.

It's good to know that you can learn something new everyday :)
