Occupation?
« on: Monday 25 February 19 00:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi.

Attached is a 1668 Dundee marriage record that I am having trouble transcribing.
What I have is...
David Abbat ______ and Barbra Stibles
being _____ gave up ye names _____  ____
_____.

I am mainly interested in the word after Abbat, hoping that it is an occupation.

I know nothing about 17thC writing but looking at it quickly it looks like Miller.

More skilled eyes yet to come. ;D

David Abbat is a:  Sailler

ADDED:

...being (con)tracted* gave up y(er)** names to be proclamed
And

*  I have interpreted the word contracted

Certainly this word ends with:  _tracted

In some other records it is written in full.

He seems to be using a special character contraction for the:  con_

This can be seen more clearly in John Warden and Andrew wat's records.

**  y(er) = their

The special character mentioned previously is similar to this (used in Court Hand), give or take an extra bend at the bottom.

That is great and it fits that he is a sailor.

Thank you very much.
