The GREENWOOD Brothers: Bexley
« on: Monday 25 February 19 16:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Michael Thomas and William Henry GREENWOOD were born in 1833 and 1831 respectively, the sons of James and Lydia GREENWOOD of Strongs Row, Bexley (1841 Census).   Both spent a short while in Parkhurst Prison between 1843 and 1846 before being pardoned from a 7 year transportation sentence for their joint burglary exploit.

William Henry re-appears in the 1851 Census, but there is no mention of Michael Thomas.   The mother at this time is a Widow.

Can anyone help in tracing these brothers from 1851 onwards please?

Thank you.

I think Michael was apprenticed to the Merchant Navy.

Perhaps he went back to sea.

TNA says there was no official registration for merchant seamen between 1857 & 1913

Good Morning bearkat,

Thank you......I will research the Merchant Navy angle.

Nevertheless, I find it strange the brothers should defy being found!!!

For now,

There a few Michael GREENWOODS in the deaths at sea.

Most can be excluded due to age. One has no age so it could be this Michael but you'll probably never know for sure.

Hello bearcat,

Sadly, both GREENWOOD's remain elusive and the only "new" piece of information is that Michael was actually born on 23/09/1833 and that seemingly on 08/09/1847 he was apprenticed to either HMS or RMS "Ocean".......the record as to HMS/RMS is indistinct.    If the former then presumably the Royal Navy, but I can find no references ???

I think the pending tray beckons!
