Alf Taylor & friend - Honesdale, Pennsylvania 1931. Needs a real clean up!
« on: Wednesday 27 February 19 21:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks, I'd be really grateful if anyone in this fabulous restorers group can help me with this one. It's old, dirty and faded. All attempts at recovery will be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks .... Sel James

Hi Sel, do you have the original of this photo and if so are you able to scan this at a higher resolution, you will get a lot better results. There is very little detail to work with at the moment.

Thanks, Pat. Yes I do, but I’m away from my desktop at the moment - will be back on deck in a few hours and I’ll attend to it then. I think the max i can scan at is 1200x1200, so I trust that will give you something to work on.
Cheers ... Sel

Hi again Pat,

I had some challenges using the Advanced mode on my scanner , but I've managed to scan this at 1200 dpi and got a 52MB TIFF file, so have re-sized it down to just below the 500KB as a JPEG for this Forum. Hope it gives you something better to work with.

Thanks again for your help and guidance.

...Sel

There is still very little detail showing I'm afraid. I've cleaned it up as best I can,

Pat, I think you’ve done a great job with what you had to work with. The original photo is extremely poor quality - out of focus to start with, and then it’s been subject to 90 years of poor handling and misuse with dirt and stains caked in, and exposure to harsh light has caused significant fading.
As they say, 'you can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear'.
Many thanks for giving it a go, I do appreciate your efforts.

Hi Peter, Many thanks for your good work.
It’s a credit to you to have a go at trying to do justice to this dirty, faded, out of focus pic. You’ve certainly produced a result which is a significant improvement on the original.
I appreciate all that you do for those of us less talented folks who use your skills and talents.
Cheers .... Sel
