Realistically, it could be Bolton or Botton.

FreeReg have it as Button

I realise you mention it in regard to the t/l issue, but I think it's an o.

I can see why they might have gone with a u, but his u is normally well-formed.

See Humphrey, Nunn & Daughter.

- love that as a term for a £10 (tenner). Looked at it for a moment, then it clicked.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

One thought, I think Bolton could be heard as Botton if said in a broad non-Essex accent.

Did a tour at Adnams a couple of years ago & I was convinced the guide was saying 'Goat sh!t' and not 'Ghost Ship' :)

The attached shows a number of entries without the looped 'l', so definite inconsistency. The later baptisms are in a totally different hand so will not help.

I am now reasonably happy it is Bolton but accept others may disagree.

thanks
