I can see why they might have gone with a u, but his u is normally well-formed.

One thought, I think Bolton could be heard as Botton if said in a broad non-Essex accent.

Did a tour at Adnams a couple of years ago & I was convinced the guide was saying 'Goat sh!t' and not 'Ghost Ship'

The attached shows a number of entries without the looped 'l', so definite inconsistency. The later baptisms are in a totally different hand so will not help.

I am now reasonably happy it is Bolton but accept others may disagree.
