Query on WW1 service record
« on: Monday 04 March 19 13:46 GMT (UK) »
On a service record for a soldier in Royal Berks Regiment. It says
France 12.8.1914 to 18.1.18
On furlo 19.1.18 to 3.2.18
France: 4.2.18 to 12.3.19
Home: 13.3.19 to 11.5.19

Would he have served in France continuously between 12 Aug 1914 and 18 Jan 1918 without coming home on leave? Would the fortnight on furlo / furlough be  granted only in exceptional circumstances?
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

According to that yes. It wouldn't necessarily have to be exceptional circumstances although often it was.
It was a case of getting permission from the C.O. In this case he wasn't very obliging to his men it would appear.
Can you give a name & no. maybe there's something else going on.

Thank you for your reply.
He was Ebenezer Lawrence - two numbers 4909 crossed out and 2277 added. He was in the Boer war and then in WW1.

Off to puppy training. Back later.
Later:
I can see he started his service with the Berks. & extended it several times to complete his 21 years.
He transferred to the ASC with no. S/22771 in 1905.
Not in the front line so probably not considered leave was much of a priority.
As a baker he would have been kept pretty busy.
There's always the possibility he didn't ask for leave. I'm sure as a professional soldier & senior NCO had he it would have been granted.
