Can anyone provide details of The Retreat, Battle RDC, Sussex
I have a distant relative residing there in 1939, it looks as if it is an institute, as there is someone whose occupation is Institute Manager.
A picture would be nice
Thanks Steve

From an article in the Sussex Agricultural Express, 11 June 1937:

A gratifying change has taken place in the public outlook towards anything connected with a Poor Law Institution.  It is no longer a stigma to have been born in a "workhouse".  That name has been scrapped long ago, and institutions are known by pleasanter names.  The one at Rye is "The Retreat"; at Battle it is "The Stone House"; and at Ticehurst it is "The Furzes".  The horrible word "pauper" is banished for ever.
