Parents of Susan Sparks born abt 1833 possibly in Clerkenwell area
« on: Thursday 07 March 19 01:07 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping someone can help me identify the parents of Susan Sparks who was born between 1829 & 1834, possibly in the Clerkenwell area.

In the 1851 Census I have an entry in the East London Union Workhouse for Ann Sparks born abt 1790 Islington and Susan Sparks born abt 1833 Clerkenwell. Between 1867 & 1876 She was in and out of the Workhouses, mostly the City Road Workhouse in St Luke. In January 1877 she was transferred from there to the Asylum at Colney Hatch where she died in November 1877 (registered in Barnet RD).

As far as I know, she had 4 children, Sarah Ann (abt 1856), Mary Ann (abt 1858), Caroline (1871) & William (1874) but she never married.

Sarah Ann was baptised at St Thomas Charterhouse in 1856 as Sarah Ann Parton or Sparks. The parents were Thomas Parton and Susan Sparks, a single woman.

Caroline and William were baptised at St Thomas Charterhouse in 1874. The parents were shown as Thomas Sparks and Susan . The were living in French Alley in Goswell Street.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks to Milliepede and louisa maud,

Unfortunately none of these are a fit. I had already looked at Frederick and his family in Goswell Street and the Frederick in Northumberland is just too far away.

Thanks, Doug.

Thanks rosie99, I was aware of that entry. I believe that Caroline may have been born in that workhouse. It was officially called The City of London Union Workhouse although it was in Bow. Other references to Caroline show her as born in Bow. As for Susan, Clerkenwell is not that far from the City and other references to her show her place of birth as London.

I still haven't been able to find Susan in the 1841 or 1851 Censuses. Also I haven't been able to find a birth registration for Caroline.

Thanks, Doug.

How have you eliminated the Clerkenwell family?  Have you considered that Frederick and Ann might be the grandparents of Susan?

Added: perhaps you mean that the Ann in Clerkenwell in 1841 can’t be the one who was in the workhouse with Susan in 1851, because she and Frederick had moved to Newcastle?  I see that Frederick’s occupation of paper stainer is consistent as between the 1841 Clerkenwell and 1851 Newcastle entries.

You may already have it but It helps us if you give the references and details of things like this as it saves us having to look for them.  They sometimes give clues in our search.  :)
