Thank you shellyesq for all the information. I have since got William Callaghan & Bridget gears marriage from NLI parish records in Midleton Co Cork 7th August 1859. Also birth of daughter Maria 8th June 1862. I cannot locate any records for William Callaghan in MA or any immigration records for the family as I presume they would have travelled together.

I have Callaghan's in Cork around 1800 on wards and part of the family left in 1846 for australia but some members of the family stayed. Michael Callaghan born 1780 to 1800 Cork, married a Mary Maher who was born 1795 in Cork.

Not always. Sometimes the husband came first.

It looks like Michael died before daughter Julia was born, which raises the question, whose daughter is Ann Callahan, living with Bridget and Julia in 1910.

Julia's marriage record said she was born in Roxbury, which is a neighborhood and post office in Boston.

------------
Births registered in the city of Boston, 1871
January 27, 1871
Julia Callahan, at 53 Vale Street, parents William and Bridget, both born in Ireland, residing in Boston. no occupation listed for William

[this is the city's copy, you can see by looking at image 1 in the set. also the book only includes records from Boston]

This entry had a note in the left margin that said "corrected". it is in the same writing as the word "deceased" in the occupation column.

A couple city directory listings for William Callahans:

----------
1869 Boston City Directory
Callahan William
  laborer 17 Oneida
  coachman 3 Kenna place
  laborer 105 Fourth
  clerk, 50 Pitts, boards 5 S Margin

1870 Boston City Directory
Callahan William
  laborer 17 Oneida
laborer 168 Third (with a Timothy at same address)
  laborer 109 Fourth
  clerk, 50 Pitts, boards 5 S Margin

[The closest one to Roxbury, where Julia was born, is Oneida Street. It was off Albany Street in the South End and was demolished in 1956. Third and Fourth St are in South Boston, South Margin looks like it was in the North End. I don't know where Kenna Place is or was.]
