Cuthbert Metcalfe bapt 1773 Hawes. Help needed
« on: Tuesday 12 March 19 15:08 GMT (UK) »
I have reason to believe that Cuthbert Metcalfe, bapt 1773 Hawes married Mary Blyth at Grinton in 1798 and in 1802 turned up in Lancaster with Mary and had their family, who were baptized at St Mary’s Lancaster. Is there any way that I could find out for sure if it’s the same Cuthbert? According to death records, Cuthbert died in 1848 in Lancaster age 82, but I can’t find any baptism that would fit. There are 3 Cuthberts baptized from 1768 to 1779 in the same locality. Any help on this would be greatfully received. Thanks

If he was 82 in 1848 he was born circa 1766.

If he is the same Cuthbert Metcalfe on the 1841 census he was 68 born circa 1773

The 1841 Cuthbert Metcalfe is of Independent means although there is a Richard Metcalfe age 38
recorded next door who could be the son bap 1802.

However:
The baptism of some children as Medcalfe  re: Cuthbert and Mary show him as a labourer

Correction 1841
Richard Metcalfe is a male servant age 38

When Mary married Thomas Heys 1837 father Cuthbert is a labourer (sister Jane was a witness)

When Thomas married 1851 Mary Redhead (he was a widower) father Cuthbert was a labourer

The 1841 census Cuthbert Metcalfe is probably the one who married Betty and had children at St Ann's 1800-1808

Thanks amondg. This is really confusing! My direct line is with Thomas, who is listed at the same address as painter age 29. I found his baptism, 1813 mother Mary, father Cuthbert. Cuthbert did have a son Richard, and is probably the same one. I also can’t help wondering if the Alexander mentioned at the same period on lancs opc,  is the brother of Cuthbert, as I found a baptism for 1767. They didn’t make it easy!!!

Thomas' first wife had maiden name of Charnley
Registration of Alice 1842 and William Charnley Metcalf 1845.

1851 they are at 64 Rose Street and Thomas is a widower.

Richard is on Penny Street in 1841.

Are you sure working backwards from your parents you have the correct Thomas Metcalf as there is another Thomas Metcalf illegitimate son of Margaret baptized at St Mary's 1813
ADDED that one may have died age 2 in 1816.

The Lancashire Archives in Preston has an admin bond dated 26 March 1852 for Mary MEDCALF
wife of Cuthbert
Ref WCW/Supra/c1241/37

I'm not sure if it will tell you much. I'm trying to find if any of the Cuthbert's left a will.

Thanks again admong. Sorry to show my ignorance, but what is an admin bond? Thomas and family show up in Preston in 1861 census. Again occupation painter. Mary Ann, his daughter, married William Rigby in Preston Aug 1861, father Thomas Me(d)calf, painter. In subsequent census, Mary Ann’s birthplace is Lancaster. The Rigby family  is my line.
