Image request cargo sailing ship
« on: Saturday 16 March 19 09:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello

My husband's ancestor Richard Coulthard was a mariner probably on a coal cargo sailing ship out of Maryport, Cumberland more than likely to Ireland. This would be end of 1700's and the first half of the 1800's.

I was wondering if anyone had an image of such a vessel please?

Many thanks

Check out Captain Cook's Endeavour - previously the Earl of Pembroke, built in Whitby in 1764 for the coastal coal trade.

Not a particular ship I'm afraid but I found this photo of Maryport harbour in the 18th century, which I thought might be of interest.

That is a great picture, Trishanne, thank you, gives all the atmosphere of the port at that time.

Thank too to Shaun J and Stanmapstone. I had tried googling then realised I was not sure what sort of ship it was and all sorts of ships were coming up. I did not realise that the Endeavour was a collier either. Amazing that a ship designed for the coastal collier trade should travel across the world and  back.
