RAMC Boer War
« on: Wednesday 20 March 19 12:24 GMT (UK) »
I have just discovered that my g grandfather served in the RAMC from 13/9/1900 - 6/4/1902 and was posted to South Africa.

I have his service record, which, is very basic. Would it be possible to track where exactly he went and with what unit? And if so where would I start my investigation. Would the National Archive be my first port of call?

Many thanks

To progress you will need his unit number. The RAMC were attached to Brigades (dressing stations, bearers etc.) these were part of Field Hospitals which were attached to Divisions.
The bars to his medals (which should be on his record) will show which fields of war he served in.
This might help but I emphasise you need a unit no.

Thanks for that. None of that information exists on his service record, so I guess that is as far as I will be able to follow that up.

Have you searched for him by name at https://www.angloboerwar.com/name-search or on the same site under RAMC in unit search which will give all the names.

This should give you the unit that Jim emphaises you need.

Thanks again for the website. Did the search and no luck unfortunately. Their were 2 people in the RAMC with his surname and they both died in 1902.

A search of his number didn't return anything either. Quite strange really.

Thanks

Have you run his name through Findmypast and Ancestrty specifically for the medal rolls.  The RAMC roll is all one and most (all?) have the units annotated WO 100/219 at the National Archives can be downloaded free.

Hi MaxD

I have run his name through both Findmypast and Ancestry on the Medal Rolls and no luck.

Robert Reynolds b1880 Dartford, Kent. I have his Attestation papers from Findmypast and it clearly states that he was in South Africa from 18-10-1900 - 5-4-1902 his number on that record is 14549.
Other than the usual personal details and his next of kin, with address, which is the info that confirmed he was indeed my g grandfather. There is no other information to help pinpoint exactly what unit he was with.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Philippe
