« on: Tuesday 26 March 19 08:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find out about Charles William Davis. Born 1832 Camberwell London
Father John Davis
Charles William Davis is not in any census before he gets married  22 Feb 1864 holy trinity church st Phillips Bristol Glos to Rosina Cole
On the marriage certificate he says his father was John Davis brides father was Thomas Hamans Cole
Of the st Phillips Marsh a Bristol potter the Cole family pottery at st Phillips Marsh
Our first records of Charles William Davis is in 1871 where he is living with Rosina and her mother
And two of Charles and Rosin’s children
But why can’t we find his birth records he says he was born in 1832 Camberwell Surrey
Father John Davis
Any help would be wonderful.
Regards Chris

what occupation is given for John, father of Charles William?

There is a possible baptism 12 Dec 1832 in Camberwell for Charles William Davis son of John, merchant, and Martha of Newington.

As he was born before Civil registration started in 1837, you are reliant on parish registers for a christening, if indeed he was christened.

It could be hard to find for a variety of reasons e.g
1) He was never christened, maybe his family were non-conformist
2) He was christened when older, not as a new born
3) He was christened somewhere else other than Camberwell, eg went back to mothers home parish for the ceremony.
4) The actual parish in Camberwell where he was chr soes not have its records online
5) The entry in the PRs is worn, faded, missing etc and so there is no transcription (if you are not working from originals)
6) Probably a whole host of reasons I havent thought of!!!

But whilst I have been typing all this - osprey has been on the case!!
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Possibly the same Martha is widowed by 1851 and in Milton by Gravesend (54 b Newington) with a son Samuel (24 b Lambeth).  Richard O Davis, 22, is also in Gravesend but separately.

Martha is with Richard, still in Gravesend, in 1861, and they are both still there (not together) in 1871.
