Unmarried mothers' homes Newcastle or Gateshead 1901 census
« on: Wednesday 27 March 19 08:08 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone advise on which institutions to scour in the 1901 census for an unmarried mother? The mother was born in Wallsend but may have been sent across the Tyne to have her baby. She had an RC baptism but, by 1901, her mother (who was probably the RC influence) had died, although the maternal grandmother was still alive.

Many thanks,
Flemming.

Might the Mother have been sent to the Tynemouth workhouse?  Did the baby survive?

Where was the child's birth registered? Who registered it and what did they say about when and where the baby was born?

I think I'd be starting with the birth cert or .pdf register entry (if you haven't already done so) to get answers to the above and take it from there.

In those days some unmarried mothers ended up in mental institutions, poor women.
In the 1950s as a student I spent a few weeks working at St. George's, Morpeth, and there were a few of these mothers there who had been there for years.
I'm not sure what happened to their babies, probably adopted.

Sorry for late acknowledgement and thanks for the replies. This line has taken an unexpected turn but may come back to the subject later.
