Lived in FALMOUTH, buried in MANACCAN 1745
« on: Wednesday 27 March 19 16:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

My ancestors John Moneypenny and Phillis Williams married in Falmouth on 13 March 1739/40.

The marriage states he was a mariner but no residences or marital status for Phillis.

They had a son Samuel Moneypenny who was baptised on 3 May 1741 in Falmouth.

A Phillis Mennepenny was then buried at Manaccan on 5 May 1745. Her residence was listed as Falmouth so she is presumably the wife of John.

I can find no burial for John Moneypenny but their son Samuel married in Budock in 1762.

I would really like some help trying to work out why Phillis was buried in Manaccan and what became of John Moneypenny.

If anyone could help that would be amazing.

Thank you,
Jonny

??Moneypenny died, (or deserted his wife and child,) and she was forced to find work that kept her and her boy alive??

Anything is possible!

To be resident of Falmouth but to be buried in Manaccan would lead to two conclusions.

1. That Phillis Williams/Moneypenny died away from home in Manaccan parish.

2. That her body was transported to Manaccan from Falmouth for burial, presumably due to a personal connection.

I would love to find out.

Thanks for replying.

Jon

Manaccan is only about 5 miles from Falmouth..... barely more than a one hour walk.

Manaccan parish records on-line here:

The Helford River means the track route must have been longer than 5 miles. Current driving route says it is 16.8 miles and so imagine it was similar then.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately the parish records are not viewable online to see who was also buried around that date. Only a searchable name list :(

"The ferry connecting the North and South banks of the Helford River has been running continuously since the Middle Ages. Then, it was a vital link for the communities providing transportation for local produce to the markets in Falmouth. The cart and driver travelled on the ferry and the horse swam along behind!"
