Do not think it is possible to get either type of V.D from toilet seats.
Had to be direct contact with a sufferer or a baby born to,a sufferer.
Babies can be born with Syphilis, because it can pass through the placenta.
They have a copper coloured rash and a high patched” cerebral “ cry.
Unmistakable.
Syphilis is a strange disease and can lie dormant and then rear its ugly head in future generations .The different stages can trick people into thinking it has gone away.
It affects innocent people and many stillbirths and miscarriages can be attributed to it.
Horribly fascinating.
Viktoria.

The point about the officers' records was they couldn't be charged with "self inflicted wounds".

I agree with all you've written Viktoria.

There used to be a part of MadameTussauds in Blackpool devoted to Venerial diseases.
We went to B/pool from our church youth club, and found the museum ,
Gosh it was totally graphic, the girls seemed to,automaticallly group together and the lads likewise.
We were pretty shy in those days, and it was really embarrassing to us all.
It was fascinating to be informed that many men especially ,contract the disease ,pass it on to their  wives and then after the secondary stage  a lull which makes them think they are cured but it comes back with a vengeance.
It was widely believed Lord Randolph Churchill had Syphilis, even when he had a high position in the government of the day.
Often a baby or two, would be lost then one or two, would survive .
The heir and the spare, then the wife often decided she had done her duty
and in effect the marriage was over just appearances kept up.
Mucky lot the aristocracy.
Paralysis of the insane ,was the cause of death on the death certs.
Mercury was thought to cure it but that can cause insanity itself.
There are tell tale signs, babies affected rather mildly can show signs which are also possible with other conditions for example no bridge to the nose.
Jack Palance the actor’s nose was like that ,very typical of but not confined to Syphilis .
The disease can be traced in bones hundreds of years old,the cemetery in London where Street girls were  buried was full of young girls showing the typical bone deformities and abscesses .
Victims ,sadly ,of the poverty of the times.

A long time ago I saw a family research programme (but can't recall which one), where a medical specialist explained to the am. researcher why several children in one family had died at various ages and why some attained adulthood. According to the specialist, who gave very graphic explanations, the causes were syphillis.   The researcher was quite shocked.

Jack Palance was a very brave man, here's why his face was different

With the outbreak of World War II, Palance's boxing career ended and his military career began, serving in the Army Air Force as a bomber pilot. ... The facial burns and resulting reconstructive surgery following the crash and burning of his WWII bomber plane actually worked to the leathery actor's advantage in Hollywood.

A grandfather died of syphilis, or so I was told.
Perhaps I should get the death certificate to check, but did not think anyone would invent that.
Also told that my oldest uncle was tested for the disease, but did not have it, none of grandfather's children did.
My reaction - So what?  That was him, I am me.

Children can suffer if the father gives it to the mother when it's in the active stage.

Hutchinson's teeth (also known as Hutchinson's incisor, Hutchinson's sign or Hutchinson-Boeck teeth) is a sign of congenital syphilis. Babies who are having these kind of teeth are smaller and more widely spaced than normal and which have notches on their biting surfaces.

Congenital syphilis is syphilis present in utero and at birth, and occurs when a child is born to a mother with syphilis. ... Babies exposed in utero can have deformities, delays in development, or seizures along with many other problems such as rash, fever, an enlarged liver and spleen, anemia, and jaundice.

Thank you, I am so glad I said that kind of nose was not specifically caused by Syphilis ,as I would otherwise have maligned a very brave man.
I liked  him,he had something special.
A bit menacing ,well many of the parts he played made him seem so,good acting no doubt.
As has been said,we must not condemn our rellies for what we find out about them,we do not know exact circumstances and  we cannot change anything
just accept them warts and all.
Oops- that was unintentional, genital warts are often a part of S.T. Ds!!!
The women who were “ carriers” earned a living the only way they could in very hard times.
In Stuart days ( I know ‘cos I was there ) were called “ Fireships”,as they carried a deadly cargo but as a burning sensation in the unmentionables was a very common symptom it could have both meanings.
Don’ we have interesting topics!
