There used to be a part of MadameTussauds in Blackpool devoted to Venerial diseases.
We went to B/pool from our church youth club,and found the museum ,
Gosh it was totally graphic,the girls seemed to,automaticallly group together and the lads likewise.
We were pretty shy in those days, and it was really embarrassing to us all.
It was fascinating to be informed that many men especially ,contract the disease ,pass it on to their  wives and then after the secondary stage  a lull which makes them think they are cured but it comes back with a vengeance.
It was widely believed Lord Randolph Churchill had Syphilis, even when he had a high position in the government of the day.

A long time ago I saw a family research programme (but can't recall which one), where a medical specialist explained to the am. researcher why several children in one family had died at various ages and why some attained adulthood. According to the specialist,who gave very graphic explanations, the causes were syphillis.   The researcher was quite shocked.

Thank you, I am so glad I said that kind of nose was not specifically caused by Syphilis ,as I would otherwise have maligned a very brave man.
I liked  him,he had something special.
A bit menacing ,well many of the parts he played made him seem so,good acting no doubt.
As has been said,we must not condemn our rellies for what we find out about them,we do not know exact circumstances and  we cannot change anything
just accept them warts and all.
Oops- that was unintentional, genital warts are often a part of S.T. Ds!!!
The women who were “ carriers” earned a living the only way they could in very hard times.
In Stuart days ( I know ‘cos I was there ) were called “ Fireships”,as they carried a deadly cargo but as a burning sensation in the unmentionables was a very common symptom it could have both meanings.
