ILIFFE in Hillmorton and Coventry
« on: Saturday 06 April 19 13:30 BST (UK) »
Trying to find out if there's a link between two lots of Iliffes!

I have Coventry Iliffes and Hillmorton Iliffes, not been able to trace the Coventry lot further back than:
William ILIFFE b. ? m. Elizabeth LANGTON at Holy Trinity, Coventry 1808

What I'd like to discover is whether they actually came from Hillmorton, or one of the Hillmorton Iliffes moved to Coventry before 1808.

I've traced my Hillmorton Iliffe family back to:
William ILIFFE b. 1736 m. Sarah SMITH at Hillmorton 1758

One of their grandsons, another William (!) was married in Coventry:
William ILIFFE b. 1812 at Hillmorton m. Elizabeth COLLIS 1843 at Coventry.

Can't help feeling there ought to be a connection between the two families, given that Hillmorton and Coventry are only about 15 miles apart.

The reason for my interest is that, my mother's father, Harry Iliffe Mander, was the son of Henry Mander and Sarah Iliffe - and her mother, Mabel Betts, was the daughter of George Betts and Elizabeth Collis Iliffe...

As transcribed
William Fliffe  of the parish of St Michael 1 Feb 1808   Coventry , Holy Trinity Elizabeth otp

Other similar.
Thomas Eliffe otp   30 May 1825   Coventry , Holy Trinity   Ann Troughton otp

John Iliff    otp   28 Sep 1829   Coventry , St Michael   Sarah Kenning

The first marriages where Iliffe appears but plenty of Jeliffe prior to that.
William Iliffe    otp   15 Oct 1828   Coventry , Holy Trinity   Sarah
Charles Iliffe of St John   29 Jun 1828 Coventry , St Michael   Rebecca
Joseph Iliffe   otp    17 Jun 1823   Coventry , Holy Trinity   Mabell

As far as I can see there were no Iliffe baptisms in Coventry before 1812 but plenty elsewhere in the county, especially Hillmorton, the transcriptions of the name pose the biggest problem, the other is there are no records for Coventry St Michael on Ancestry.

Hi
The William who married in 1808 was buried at St Michael 31 Dec 1815 age 30.
The William of 1828 is married by licence ,born c 1807 a miller,so probably the son of the above.

There is a Will for a John Illife of Thurlaston in the parish of Dunchurch 1807.He died 1804.
He has a windmill which he leaves to his eldest son William.
Other sons Thomas ,John, and Charles to recieve payment of £50 and daughter Ann £20.

Elizabeth Illiffe Will 1857 is presumably  William's widow-children Mary Foode/Forde/Goode widow of Joseph ,Martha Buckney wife of David  Buckney of Middlesborough bookkeeper and sons William and Francis. They share and share alike with the girls getting her wearing apparel and William her Foles Bible.Francis her Burkes Exporation and Octave Bible.

It looks like the Coventry Illiffes  are all sons of John from Dunchurch .
He married Ann Leeson 21.101.1781 at Dunchruch
