Cape of Good Hope Birth
« on: Sunday 07 April 19 03:43 BST (UK) »
On the birth certificates of several of her children born between 1868 and 1877, in Queensland, Australia, Mary Ann McKay stated she married John Cain (born approx 1832 at Tuam, Galway, Ireland) on 2 June 1857 at Glasgow, Scotland.  She also stated she was born at the Cape of Good Hope in approx 1842.  Despite searching under various spellings, this marriage cannot be found and to date, I have not located her birth either.  Where would be the most appropriate site to search for her birth please?

The best place to look for an 1857 marriage in Glasgow would be the Statutory Marriages on Scotlandspeople. For the baptism you might try Findmypast as they have some Cape Colony records.

Thank you Craclyn but had already tried ScotlandsPeople and FamilySearch for a marriage and there is nothing recorded for that couple.  Additionally, there are no SA births on Find My Past unless I am missing something.  Thanks for your suggestions.  They're a mystery couple or told "Whoppers".

There was a Marianne Mackay born August 18th 1840, baptised a month later in Malta. Daughter of John Mackay, corporal in the 92nd Highlanders, and his wife Frances Kennedy.

Might the marriage date of 1857 have been wrongly recorded? If the birth year is correct then she would only have been 15. If 1857 is correct for the marriage then there may be other children somewhere. You mentioned having found children from 1868 onwards. Maybe they actually married in 1867, or maybe you have a lot more family waiting to be found in another country.

Craclyn, The marriage date was shown on several of the children's birth certificates Yes, there were three other children born before 1868 but I cannot find them anywhere or when and where this couple came to Australia.  There is no doubt that the stated year 1857 is correct, that is if ever they were married at all.  Thanks for all suggestions.
