Help needed to find 2 wills from 1436/7 & 1477
« on: Wednesday 10 April 19 17:14 BST (UK) »
I am trying to unravel the Cockett / Coket / Cokett family of Ampton (or Hampton) in Suffolk and other places in both Suffolk & Norfolk.

I have found multiple references to this will:-

John Cockett of Ampton in co. Suffolk, as by his Will 15 Hen. VI., An" 1437.

I cannot find the will and this one is quite important to gain further information on his family and, I believe, to add a generation not shown in the visitations and other resources.

I am also unable to locate this one for:-

John Cockett of Ampton as by his will 17 Edw IV 1477

Any thoughts, ideas or eureka moments will be gratefully received.

Edward

What is the source of this information? A will that once existed might not have survived.

You might find some information about them, particularly about executors, in the Common Pleas records.

In 1484 there is a lawsuit in which the plaintiffs were:

Suffolk. Alice who was the wife of John Coket; John the son of John Coket; Walter Coket; Hamon Claxston; Clement Clark; the executors of John Coket, of Ampton.

Sources are 2 different visitations and oddly they also show different wives.  I do appreciate that the may not exist now.

I'll have a look at the Common Pleas and thanks for the other links

Thanks, on order from Suffolk RO, the 1445 one may be the 'missing' JC

Walter is the brother or cousin of the JC that dies in 1483

Thanks

Bit late now Edward, but it turns out NCC (as well as other Norfolk related) wills have been put online by the LDS Church

Cannot see any Coket (etc)  references in the Common Pleas

1484 lawsuit, where did you find this?

The other link is in Latin, not one of my talents. Luckily retired MD coming for coffeee tomorrow so he may get this for homework  :)

Thanks

Indexes are here:

http://aalt.law.uh.edu/Indices/CP40Indices/CP40_Indices.html

You need to search each one separately.

Or you can use google:

site:http://aalt.law.uh.edu/indices/cp40indices/ "coket, john"

Also worthwhile searching here:

http://www.uh.edu/waalt/index.php/Main_Page

Could they have come from Braintree? There was a Walter Coket, of Braintree, Essex (Branketre), draper, who was the testator in 1418.
