Robert Edward REES 1849-1927 missing from 1881 Census
« on: Friday 12 April 19 15:00 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have found my ancestor in the 1851/1861/1871 and 1891/1901/1911 census returns but his whole family appear to be missing from the 1881 census.

All returns give the family living in Gloucester and the son Absalom is married in Gloucester in 1891 and I can't see that any of the other sons died in the meantime so there should be a family something like this in 1881:

Robert Edward REES/REECE Head b 1849 Gloucester, Shipwright or Carpenter maybe
(H)Esther Harriet (Ann?) Wife b 1846 in Ross, Herefordshire
Absalom Henry b 1868 Gloucester?
Robert Edward b 1871 Gloucester
Thomas b 1873 Gloucester
William Edwin b 1876 Gloucester

I haven't been able to find a birth record for Absalom or find him in the 1891 Census either.

I assume either the family moved somewhere else or the surname has been recorded differently but I have searched everywhere and everyway I can think of with the limited census access I have and come up with nothing.

Can anyone find them??

Ancestry has a copy of the Marriage Entry

Robert REES aged 20, Bachelor, occupation: Shipwright, residence at time of marriage: Park Street

father: Robert REES, Shipwright

Esther BRAWN - aged 20 - Spinster, residence: Park Street, father: John BRAWN, Blacksmith

both sign their name

witnesses: Joseph EDWARD and Amelia EDWARD x her mark

The surname BRAWN - as been overwritten both on Esther's surname and her father's.

There is a big gap between the children or Robert & Esther (almost ten years between William aged 15 and Mary aged 5 on the 1891 census)

Yes, I think that is the marriage and I had my eye on Hancel Henry as the only possible match for Absalom and I have just found an Ansell Reece on the 1891 Census as a lodger with the Oakley family!

An even bigger gap if you assume Absalom/Hancel Henry was born in 1868. Although that marriage and birth date looks suspiciously close.

When Robert Edward REES enlisted with the Gloucestershire Regiment - in 1889 (on Ancestry)

He gives his father's address as No. 2 Barbican Buildings, Gloucester - so the family were there before the 1891 census - still can't find them 1881 census!
