John McCulloch
« on: Saturday 13 April 19 13:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm researching the McCulloch family line.
I have traced John McCulloch, to London Marylebone in 1852. Further census records suggest he was born circa 1811/12 in Wigtownshire. His marriage certificate says his father was called John and he was a coachman. I've now hit a brick wall. Ive checked census and birth records but can't find a leas. Can anyone help please?

Thank you
Kate

There are 3 John McCullochs with father John McCulloch on S.P. born Wigtownshire around the time you are wanting.
b 8/5/1808 Stoneykirk, mother Mary Tire.
b 10/8/1814 Mochrum, mother Isabella Tomson.
b 5/9/1819 Kirkinner, mother Margaret McGuffock.
There is a John McCulloch married to Harriet in the census on F.S. at Marylebone, is this your John McCulloch, also another J. McC at Marylebone married to Jane. Both Johns are b 1813.

Does the marriage in 1852 indicate his father was deceased?

It may be an idea to post names of children in order & work from family names connected to his wife's line for an idea of his mother's name to find his potential baptism if it exists & parents on 1851/1841 census'?

Is this the right 1851 census entry for St Marylebone?

John McCulloch 38 b Scotland - servant
Jane  38 b Surrey
Mary Ann 10  b St George Middlesex
Jane 7    Ditto

HO 107 piece 1490 folio 685 page 54

However - there is a banns entry 22.2.1852 for John McCulloch and Jane Turner @ Christ Church Marylebone

Marriage 23.2.1852 Christ Church St Marylebone shows Jane was a widow previously Cutler.  John was a servant as was his father John. Father not shown as deceased.

EDIT

1861 shown as married aged 45 but not with family.  Occ servant.  Birthplace mistranscribed as Nigtonshire

Wow, thank you all for such helpful responses. You have all correctly found the right person. John was married twice, firstly to Jane and then when widowed he married Harriet.

The suggestion about children's names was helpful but I dont think the daughters listed on the census were his as their ages don't tie up with marriage date. Jane was a widow when she married John and I assumed her daughters took his surname. They were Jane and Mary.

Thank you for finding John on the 1861 census. I'm confused why he wasn't listed with Harriet as their sons Sidney J and Walter J had been born by then. John, Harriet and the boys appear together on the 1871 census. He was a servant and later a butler, might he have been a live in servant in 1861?

I dont know how I will know for definite John's birthdate and who his parents were. None of the fathers suggested appear as a coachman in the Scottish census. His father wasn't listed as deceased when he married Jane (1852) and Harriet (1854).

Best wishes
Kate

Thank you. Yes this is the family. Harriet lived until 1903, was living with John according to 1891 census. By 1901 John seems to be boarding with his adopted daughter Jane, but not with Harriet...nursing home?
I would really like to explore John's parentage if I can.
