Charles LUGG born abt 1846 died 1870
« on: Monday 15 April 19 16:13 BST (UK) »
Hi, hoping someone can help me find out more about my 3rd great grandfather, Charles LUGG. He married Ann MOULD 4 Dec 1869 Easton, Hampshire. She was born 1849 and died 1886 Alresford.

According to his death certificate he died 3 Oct 1870 Micheldever, aged 24, a farm labourer.

On his marriage certificate his father was John LUGG, Charles was aged 24, and they both resided in Easton.

I'm trying to locate his birth and parents. The most likely seems John and Sophia LUGG in Bere Regis, but his fathers occupation would be shoemaker, not what is this John's occupation. Hard to read but could be labourer on marriage cert, whereas the John who married Sophia was a shoemaker.

They had a daughter, Ellen Elizabeth born 8 Aug 1870 Micheldever.

Does anyone have any clue where I go to now? I truly appreciate all help. Thanks, Amanda

Have you got father John on the 1871 census, the one closest to the marriage?

He may well have been labouring at the time.

Sophia looks to have been a Barnes so I wonder if this is baby Charles

Sep 1845 Wareham * and Purbeck district

Charles Lug

Mothers maiden name Barnes

* seems to be the right district for a birth in Bere Regis

If his parents are John and Sophia, his baptism details are :
Charles Lugg son of John & Sophia Lugg bapt 5 Oct 1845 Bere-Regis, Dorset

However, it appears this John died 1855 (see below) and his father isn't listed as deceased on his marriage certificate in 1869. This is why I am not sure just who his parents are.
John Lugg buried 20 May 1855 age 45 at Bere Regis

Father’s names were given but not always noted as deceased even if they were.
I have several certificates with the fathers not noted as deceased.

Might explain why John is just described as a labourer if he had died when Charles was a boy.

Ok, thanks Milliepede. Unfortunately the UK death certificates don’t give a lot of info, so the only info I have on possible parents is his marriage certificate.

I’ve tried looking up newspapers online but couldn’t find anything about him or his death. Seems so sad to die at 24 after only being married a year, and if that’s his father, him dying also so young at the age of 45.

I’ll look into it further tomorrow night as it’s almost 3am and I must get to bed lol.  Thanks for your assistance :)

A Lugg family tree has his mother Sophia dying in 1853 so he lost both parents at a young age  :(
