Tasmania: Thomas William PARRINGTON, born 1835, London
« on: Monday 15 April 19 16:41 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Thomas William PARRINGTON disembarked at Hobart from the St.Vincent on 26/05/1853 to complete his outstanding servitude of 2 years.......he was awarded his Certificate of Freedom on 06/07/1855.   His parents were William and Rachel PARRINGTON who lived in the Kings Cross area of London.

I can find no further reference to him and wonder if someone can help.

Thank you,

BAC3

Did you not consider he may have returned to England and look for him in English records?  You will find him in the English censuses and a death in 1917 on freebmd

I am assuming this is your man - I know you would have this information but just in case........

Thomas William PARRINGTON, born abt 1834
convicted at the Old Bailey 3 July, 1848,
departed per St Vincent, 28 December 1852.

There seems to be an earlier conviction for larceny, 6 July, 1847, Central Criminal court; sentence 6 months imprisonment. As he plead guilty and had a prior conviction,  in 1848 I assume it's the same person.

According to the Old Bailey site his place of birth was Suffolk.

Place of birth also shown on his convict indent as Suffolk - there is a notation next to the word 'Suffolk' which could be Street or Sheet. (Is there a Suffolk St near to Kings Cross.  I know there's a Sufolk Street near the National Gallery)

Sorry - no help at all really.   :(

My apologies.................he certainly could have returned to England.

Unfortunately the Australian outward passenger listings, especially those of Tasmania which are normally excellent, made no reference to him and consequently, and stupidly, I never "thought outside the box" :'( :'(   He could have worked his passage on a whaling ship via the USA, for instance!!

I can only say thank you and, now, go and stand red-faced in the corner!!

Good Evening CaroleW,

Having set me on the course of plotting "The Return of the Native" I feel it only fair that I release my findings!!

Thomas William PARRINGTON appears to have married three times:

              1:   Mary Ann LOMAS on 02/03/1862 at Regent Square, Camden;
2:   Caroline SEVERTER on 04/12/1870 at Edgbaston: and
3:   Elizabeth SMITH in 1st quarter 1888 at Aston.

In the first two cases his father is correctly quoted as William PARRINGTON, Carpenter, but on 2 his nomenclature is "Batchelor" and not supposedly "Widower" as in 3.  However, I cannot unearth a death for Mary Ann PARRINGTON.....divorce would have been slightly problematic....Caroline PARRINGTON died in 1887.    As you remarked Thomas William PARRINGTON died in March 1917.

Just one more missing link to add to his escape from "down under" ??? ::)

Have you checked GRO online for Parrington births with mmn Lomas?

Would suggest you ask the moderator to move your post to (possibly) the Warwickshire board

I had checked the GRO, both for the children (mmn LOMAS) and for Mary Ann PARRINGTON's death (no entry and the confusing 1871 Census)..........hence my remark about "divorce", otherwise Thomas William PARRINGTON was, allegedly, a practising bigamist ;D

Maybe I should arrange to move the topic as you suggest.
