Rootsweb, firezilla and a virus!

 I'm just starting the process of getting back in touch with my Rootsweb Freepage following the recent long outage.

I downloaded Filezilla (as recommended by Rootsweb), and on starting to install, was promptly told by my antivirus that I'd been attacked by a virus! Now thoroughly spooked. Has anyone else had any similar problems??

And can anyone recommend a suitable (ie easy to use) FTP programme?

What makes you think that FileZilla is the problem?   

You've selected filezilla as the problem and not rootsweb, nor something else      
Is there something speicifc {  } specific why you think that FileZilla is the basis of your problems?     

You DO have the base tree on your machine?     
You have at least 1x clean backup of the base tree ( and Gedcom ) ?     

 First, run a full virus scan on all of your storage machines/drives.

Yes, quite sure it was filezilla. Rootsweb has never been a problem, and my antivirus flashed up immediately I started to install Firezilla. Nothing else has changed on my computer.

I run Mcafee Webadvisor as well as antivirus. And have Firefox blocking trackers and most third-party cookies.

And yes, I have clean copies of everything on both a memory stick and an online automatic backup. Although what my Gedcom has to do with my Freepage, I don't know. They are completely different!

You assume = "Quite sure" ! ? Where did you download it from? ( the official site? Clean source ?  )     

You assume = "Rootsweb has never been a problem"  ?       

You assume = Macafee advisor, as installed by you ? Why are you running multiple antivirus?   

You assume = Clean copies on a stick AND ONLINE, you have checked? Since the virus warning?         

You assume = That everything is clean at your end ?               You know?     
You assume = That everything is clean at Rootsweb end ?        You know?     

        

Remind me? Why are you asking us?






Gedcom, as mentioned by me, would be just another copy ( different style ) of the basics data items you should already have

Prawn, if you got FZ from a reputable source, check the Macafee forum for any reports of false positives. I use FZ with no problems, but I use Avast rather than Macafee.

Rootsweb is part of Ancestry. I followed their link to the download page. That is why I want to know - if Ancestry is recommending something this buggy (go and google Filezilla and virus, wish I had before I tried. It's all a bit out of date but highly indicative of problems in the past), I want to tell them what's happened. Since starting this thread, one I posted somewhere else has come up with someone else with the same problem, so I probably now have my answer to the first question.

And yes, everything else IS clean. It's not long since I did a full system scan. And no, I only have Mcafee installed - the regular antivirus and their Web Advisor.

Macafee is notorious for picking up clean files as malicious.
Norton is much better at pickingvup real threats.
That's not to say you don't/didn't have a real threat of course.

I don't use Windows so here are a couple general ideas. Can the Windows file manager do sftp? The ones for Linux can.
And have you tried googling "applications like filezilla" ? or "filezilla  vs ..." and look at what Google suggests?

It's easy to use and has always worked perfectly for me.
