Jeremiah Crowther 1779 Ribbsford/Bewdley

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could look up the following baptisms to see if there is any additional information given in the Parish Register please?

In 1851 Jeremiah Crowder (Crowther) gives his place of birth as Bedgley which I think is a mistranscription of Bewdley). Wolverhampton Piece 2019 Folio 737 Page number 7

Below is the only baptism of the right time in the general location so I assume the parents are William and Mary:

Name Jeremiah Crowther Gender Male Baptism Date 1779 Baptism Place Ribbsford, Worc., Eng. Father William Crowther Mother Mary.

FreeReg does not have this on the system and Ancestry only has the select or extracted records which gives you very little additional info.

I have not been able to find William and Mary's marriage or any other children in this area (although a William and Mary Crowther have 7 children 1762-1778 at Chaddesley Corbett but I can't be sure they are the same William and Mary).

I agree the 1851, when they are in Wolverhampton, looks like Bedgley, so could this mean Sedgley, adjacent to the 1841 above. However that is in Staffordshire, but if he was born on the edge of Sedgley, he might have been on the edge of Dudley, Worcestershire. Sadly Ancestry still thinks Dudley is in Staffs.

Either way the only birth record on line seems to be the one you have.

Esther 1773 & William 1776 Crowder born Brierley Hill, on Freereg. Did they then move 12 miles to Ribbesford?

Hi Colin,
Many thanks for getting back to me. I hadn't thought that it might have been a miss spelling of Sedgley, thank you as that is another chain of thought. I had gone along with Worcestershire as as you found in 1841 whilst in Staffs he says he was born out of the county and in 1851 names Worcestershire. I went with Bewdley as is liked a bit like Bedgley and was 1.3mi from Ribbesford however now you mentioned that Dudley is in Worcestershire, the Sedgley idea fits better and is where later generations are found.

Thanks for this, I had not considered this marriage as I incorrectly placed them in Chaddesley Corbett which threw the suspected date of marriage back to 1762

This is interesting as Jeremiah married Mary Russell 22 Nov 1802 • St Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England (I can't see there abode anywhere) and I am currently investigating 2 Mary Russell's, one baptised to John in Sedgley 1781 and the other to Thomas in Kingswinford!
