George HANCOX, born c1838, Radway, Warwickshire

Hello,

George HANCOX was born c1838 (baptised 15/03/1840), the son of Richard and Sylvia HANCOX (nee TAYLOR).   The latest information I can find is the 1881 England Census (RG11/1524/86, p.9), which indicates he had been in the Navy, although no details retrieved (and, sadly, no success with the Armed Forces Board!!).

Other than the 1881 reference I wonder if someone can unearth details for him from 19/06/1861 onwards, when he was discharged from Parkhurst Prison after being imprisoned for 4 years for arson (setting fire to an outhouse and a hayrick)

Incidentally, the Grandson "Albert HANCOX" in 1881 was Albert William Harris HANCOX but the GRO shows no MMN, which may accord with the fact that in 1881 George HANCOX seems to be categorised as "unmarried", unless I am misreading the detail

The grandson in 1881 is surely Silvia's grandson, so who was his Mother?

You have noted that Albert HANCOX's mother was Matilda HANCOX.

George HANCOX had a younger sister Matilda, born c1844.   Unless of course the WEST's mentioned in 1881 had a daughter, Matilda, who "dallied " with George HANCOX and the resultant base-born Albert

The fact Albert has "William Harris" as 2 of his names makes me think that might allude to the name of his father.

I was assuming it was his younger sister,  though they are not together in 1871 (cannot see Albert).

Matilda marries in 1871 to Charles Hewitt.

Marriage is after census, so where is Albert?

Couldn't find him but when he marries he names father as Edward Hancox so I think that is really a combination of grandfather Edward (West) and mother Matilda Hancox.
