Is this a military uniform?
« on: Tuesday 23 April 19 20:39 BST (UK) »
Hi there. I'm hoping someone can shed a light onto a photograph I've found amongst my hubby's inherited documents! His Great Grandfather (I believe) who was born 1874 is in the centre of this photograph but looks like a young boy. I've tried to identify the uniform but have had no luck. He eventually joined the police so I was wondering if this was anything to do with that? I'd be very grateful for any help! The back of the photograph is interesting too......W Hewitt Wilton Photographer Southchurch. By appointment H.H Price Ibrahim and H.I.H The Late Prince Imperial (not sure if that helps) Many thanks in advance

The uniform is British Army, the flaming grenade collar dogs were worn by the Royal Engineers and Artillery, amongst others. Perhaps if you gave us a name someone could look for records, if they survive.

Thank you. His name was Herbert Elliott Keough and he was indeed a gunner in the Royal Artillery. I do have lots of info on him but I couldn't work out his age from this photograph. He was born 1874 and he looks so very young in this picture I thought the uniform could be something else. I also have found a hand written diary from 1st January 1900 until 1901. It makes for interesting reading although some of it is illegible. Also newspaper articles from 1899 mentioning the KEOUGH brothers. All based in Birmingham and his father was head warder at Winson Green Prison. Interesting family!

He attested for the Royal Artillery in 1888, aged just 14.

His army file is on FindMyPast:  https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbm%2fwo97%2f5277%2f172%2f001&parentid=gbm%2fwo97%2f5277%2f919926

Wow! So that explains it. He must be close to 14 in that photograph too. Thank you so much for your help. It's very much appreciated.

The lance-bombardier in the dark tunic next to your ancestor has a Saddlers Badge (or horse collar maker) above the chevron on his upper arm.

The side caps appear to have 'RA' titles on them.  I have not seen that before.
