Burpham query
« on: Tuesday 23 April 19 22:01 BST (UK) »
Have been researching the life of one Rev Tiverton Preedy who was an Islington based vicar.  He died in 1928.

Have found an essay written in 1956 by Mr Ruthven Evans who was the organist at St Silas Church Islington when Rev Preedy was there.

Ruthven Evans was in Burpham west Sussex when he wrote the essay. Almost certainly Ruthven Evans never lived in Burpham although can't be certain  of this.

In the essay Ruthven Evans states that as he writes this essay he is 'sitting in Father Preedy's chair.' - in Burpham.

I wonder how artefacts from Rev Preedy found their way to Burpham - are there any other Preedy linked artefacts in Burpham - is the chair still there?

I have written to the vicar but he couldn't help.

I'm aware that this is like looking for the proverbial needle in a hundred haystacks but does any one with local knowledge have any idea where the chair etc might be large country house possibly - hotel??

Many thanks.

Might be a case of follow the probate!
Looks like it went to Reverend Cuthbert Fetherstone (Trower? The abstract isn't clear if this is the same person!), William Ford and John Davies Esq.

These three were the executors of his will, not necessarily the beneficiaries.

True true, silly me, however ordering the will might be the way to go or it might say nothing!

I have the form which lists the 3 executors and the amount the Rev Preedy left.

What I haven't got are details of who The Rev Preedy left his money etc to.

I will have to try to get a copy of the actual will.

Thanks.

Good afternoon,

Could it be one of those things that didn't actually exist. As kids we used to told we were traveling by Shanksies pony, ie, walking. No pony involved.

It is recorded that the accommodation supplied to Rev Preedy in London at one stage had no furnishings. So could the "Rev Preedy's chair" be the floor where he slept also.

Mr Evans could simply have been sitting on the floor, "Rev Preedy's chair".

Of course this could be it but if it still exists it is probably at Barnsley FC. The team he founded when he worked in Yorkshire at his first church.

Writing to the vicar at Burpham is probably no good as you would need the Catholic church which is what I believe he was.
