Methodist chapel Sutton Bassett
« on: Wednesday 24 April 19 03:53 BST (UK) »
Just wondering if anyone knows if Methodists kept any records? Just clutching at straws really, but found out there was a Methodist chapel in Sutton Bassett.

Many thanks.
David.

Yes, Methodists do keep records, but what happens to them is anyone's guess.  They are not Noncomformists for nothing  :o
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

I can't see ant records for Sutton Bassett but they may have been baptised at the nearest big town, Market Harborough, where there were many Wesleyan Methodist.

If you could post some of the names, they could be checked.

Some (all?) are also on Familysearch - e.g. - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JQBQ-3DQ lived in Naseby, Northamptonshire.

https://search.findmypast.co.uk has the images

and https://bmdregisters.co.uk/

Methodists are organised in Circuits of several chapels. Market Harborough being the nearest large town, they were probably on the Market Harborough Circuit. Records for the circuit are at the LEICESTERSHIRE Record Office, so you might want to try there as well.

Thank you everyone. Really do appreciate it.

Im still clutching at straws trying to find my William Stevenson who is in the 1841/51/61 census born of Weston in 1790/1. The Ashley and Wilbarston Congregational Chapel have Stevensons baptising children but the register starts 1790. Did he just miss the beginning of the new register? As a book I read states the chapel was built in the 1600s.

Im trying to find other NC in and around the area. The back of the Weston registers had 2 loose leaf pages that were microfiched in that order, and why I didnt find them initially when I trawled through the fiches 10 years ago.

At the back were 2 marriages for Stevensons of the parish of Great Easton, Leicestershire which isnt far away. He isnt in the anglican registers there or surrounding area so hoping to find him hiding in a NC chapel somewhere.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

David.

Looking at the census, there was a Thomas Stevenson baptised in Weston by Welland, next to Sutton, on 12 Oct 1817, son of William and Sarah.

That's my GG-Grandfather. The father William was married in the nearby village of Cottinghsm in 1816. This is where the trail goes dead.

Many thanks,
David.
