Thanks Stan.

I will work with these names and see what I can find on the street!

Can you suggest best site to see census records?

Is there any free sites or do I need to subscribe?

Many thanks x

According to the Ordnance Survey Maps the houses were built after the 1891 census, so there are only the results for the 1901 and 1911 censuses, and the 1939 Registration. There will be Electoral Registers but I don't think they are on line.

See the 1919 map at https://maps.nls.uk/view/120934521#zoom=4&lat=10586&lon=8873&layers=BT

The houses are not shown on the 1897 map https://maps.nls.uk/view/120934518#zoom=4&lat=10427&lon=8806&layers=BT

Hello
It 's a bit of a struggle but yes I would go for Censuses and Electoral registers first.
It looks like in 1901 that it was a butcher's shop
Thomas Reay 43 butchers shop

The 1901 census does not have any house numbers.

Stan

Correction, there are no house numbers shown after Number 44. I don't know if the houses have been renumbered.

All born Bill Quay.
They are gone by 1911 when it is a grocers shop from Directories run by Mary Ann smith widow.

Maps could also help, especially the tithe maps if the house was built that early.
The National Library of Scotland has ordinance survey maps for all of the country.

I've managed to get a copy of the 1911 census

Mary Ann Smith.  Head. 67.  Widow born Winlaton Durham
William Thomas Smith. Son. 30.  Single. Grocer (Counterman) Born wardley colliery

The signature on the bottom right has Thomas William Smith crossed out then Mary Ann Smith wrote above it, do you think this could have been her husband?

I'm wondering if there were any more children.

Still working on Obtaining the 1939 census.

But progress being made is good!

Just discovered this interesting thread and this board !

I'm pretty sure John R Reay (13) was my grandfather . I knew they were from Bill Quay but had no idea of the location of the butcher shop.
In Kelly's directory from 1883 I also see a John Reay butcher in Heworth Lane.
By 1911 I think I've found my gf (by then a butcher too) boarding in Whitley Bay !

I'd be grateful for any more info on the Reays of Bill Quay !
