hi, i think i have managed to track my ancestor, but would like someone to explain to me how she would be living at this address??? i mean as unpaid domestic duties? i dont understand as the 2 others are clearly husband and wife but i cant understand how she fits in. i have found emily at age 3 (1881)and 13(1891) with her parents, i have found her in school at age 5 then im hoping ive found the right emily in 1891 as a servant in westminster. single, then single and a ladies maid in 1911 but now moved away from london and is in bournemouth but then in 1939 shes in billericay....does this sound right to some of you who are more experienced at this?. thank you.

From what I have seen in the 1939 register adult women of all ages without employment were generally marked as UDD.

I would read the entry as Emily HUNT born 1877 was the householder and was not employed.  It would be reasonable to think that she was living on her savings.  In the same house were the MAXWELLs Arthur (b1864) and Emma (b1876). These could be either relatives or lodgers.

Without knowing the type of house and its value it is not possible to say if Emily owned the property or rented it.  My guess would be (unless she had received a large legacy) she was probably renting it, with lodgers to help pay the bills.

Hope this helps
Philip

The Maxwell’s  married in 1919. Arthur was a 54yr old widower and Emma was a 42yr old spinster surname Crowhurst.  Suggests they were lodgers

Very unlikely she owned the house.  When did she die?  If she owned the house there could be a will or letters of administration
