Parents of Jane Cairns
« on: Friday 26 April 19 09:56 BST (UK) »
Hi after a recent visit to Wooler I spent some time looking through the burial transcripts in St Mary`s Church and came across a death which has made me doubt the parents/ancestors of my 4 x great grandmother Jane Cairns.

Jane Cairns married David Rutherford 12th June 1810 in Chatton. I have a copy of the marriage banns that I got from Woodhorn Archives. The 2 witnesses were William Rutherford, Davids brother and a Ralph Cairns. They had 2 children Grace born 4th Jun and baptised 16th Jun 1811 and Thomas born 30th Dec 1812 and baptised 19th Jan 1813. Baptisms were at United Associate Tower Hill-NC,Wooler. I was told a few years ago that Jane was born about 1782 in Rothbury Northumberland to father James and Mother Elizabeth Snowdon. This fitted well because it was the only Jane Cairns there were records for at the time so didn`t doubt that. There were records of a death for a Jane Rutherford in 1837.

The record I found reads Rutherford Burial 1816, Jane Rutherford late Carens, Parish of Doddington, wife of David Rutherford Husbandman, died Apr 14, aged 28 years, childbed, also the child.

After looking again through the records I have come across a birth of Jane Cairns born 19 Sept 1787 and baptised 23rd Sept in United presbytarian Church Wooler to father Alexander and mother Elizabeth. This birth would fit better. I dont know if this has been newly added to family search and ancestry but have never noticed this before. I have been trying to see if theres a marriage or birth for Alexander and Elizabeth. There is a  death for Alexander aged 83 in Glendale in 1838 which would give him a DOB 1855 and Elizabeth in 1843 aged 85 which gives her a DOB 1858.

Would I be right in thinking that the 2nd Jane Cairns is more likely as the death has knocked me sideways  :-\

Hello Susan
Bad luck with the new baptism and burial but it does look as though that death in 1819 is your Jane .Her parents would be the Alexander and Elizabeth you found.
They had a really big family starting in 1780.
Eleanor 14 Feb 1780
Robert 17 Oct 1781
Alexander 18 May 1783
Thomas 30 Nov 1785
Jane  19 Sep 1787
John 10 Oct 1789
Marie Jobson 12 Apr 1795
James 3 July 1798
Joseph 20 Nov 1800

I'm struggling to see a marriage but then it's near the Scottish border and it could be an irregular marriage.
I would go for Jobson as Elizabeth's maiden name given her daughter born 1795
There is also Robert Jobson s of John and Eleanor baptised in Wooler 17 .9.1768
(Her brother or father and mother  perhaps). It certainly suggests Robert and Eleanor are from her side of the family.
Other children Joseph 1770,Jane 1772,Margaret 1774,John 1776 and Robert 1778.

Could this be Alexander Carns at Lowick baptised 27 Feb 1752 son of James.
Brother William 26 Mar 1749

I should add that the Carns couple having children in Wooler in the 1755's are Andrew and Jane who seem to have married at Norham 22 Jan 1743 ,Andrew Cairns and Jane Smith

Hi Ciderdrinker

Thank you for the information you have found. Its much appreciated. I found the burial accidently when looking for other Rutherford ancestors which I knew would have been buried there. It seems like there has been a lot more baptisms added on both ancestry and family search as I have never noticed this baptism before.

The surname Jobson does seem quite likely for Elizabeth and Eleanor and John and Eleanor would fit in nicely too.

I wondered whether Ralph Cairns who was a witness at David Rutherford and Jane Cairns wedding was a relative of Janes but havent found a connection. It would be great to find Alexander and Elizabeths marriage

Thank you again Cider.
