Occupation of ancestor on 1861 Census and Marriage Certificate
« on: Friday 26 April 19 22:26 BST (UK) »
My ancestor was a barber/hair dresser working in Marylebone and is described as such on the 1851 census and on his first two marriage certificates (he was married three times). But the 1861 Census shows him listed as a Hair dresser and something else I can't read. Can anyone else work out what it says?

Also his last marriage certificate shows his occupation as a Cutler which as far as I know is a knife seller. Is there a known connection between that and hair cutting or might it mean something else?

Maybe “Picture Dealer”?

I suppose cutlers would sell/make scissors too
Added...and cut throat razors.

I found this definition of Cutler:
Cutler: made or sharpened knives, swords and edged tools.

Can you give names, reference numbers etc for the 1861 census entry so we can have a look at it for ourselves?  :)

Added: like Mckha, I thought the second word might be Dealer. I was not sure about the first word.

Hi
Leather Dealer?
Used for sharpening.

I agree that the second word looks like dealer but the first word is puzzling. I thought it might be pewter but can't see a conection between that and hair dressing. Someone else suggested peruke dealer, which were a type of wig, but it doesn't look like peruke.

A quick search of the 1861 census shows the following occupations:

Hairdresser and Toy dealer
Hairdresser and Game dealer
Hairdresser and General dealer.

And in the 1851 there is a Hairdresser and Seed dealer.

So there needn't necessarily be a direct connection with hairdressing and the other slightly mysterious occupation.

deejayEn you should remove that whole census page, we are only supposed to post snips for identification, not a whole page.

On a close look, I agree Picture Dealer look right.
