Emmanuel Kisby, Eastrea/Coates b. c1797, Baptism/Birth
« on: Saturday 27 April 19 12:06 BST (UK) »
Good morning, my first post on RootsChat so please be gentle ;D

According to the 1851 census, Emmanuel was born in Eastrea and gave his age as 54. From other searches it would seem Eastrea had it's own church up to the 18th century but as far as I can find out Whittlesey or Coates then became the parish church for Eastrea.

Kisby was an extremely common name in the area and it would seem Emmanuel was used for many of the first born.

Any help in tracing birth or baptism records would be gratefully received.

Spencer

Welcome to Rootschat.

Have you tried to narrow down Emanuels Parents by the names of his and Janes children?

They christened;
Levi 1817
Ann 1818
Elizabeth 1820
James 1822
Matthew 1825
Mary 1830
Cant see a christening for John c 1833-35

Sorry I dont have access to Parish Records but hopefully someone else can help :)

Excellent stuff, thank you Margaret. That was a great help but now I would like to go back one generation. According to the 1841 Census for Whitllesey there was another family of Kisby's - John and Mary - living in Towns End Peterboro and who seem to be about the right age for Emmanuel's parents at his birth (28 and 18).

I know it's a long shot but living near each other and being the right age?? Have you got anything that might prove (or disprove) this theory?

Thanks

Spencer

Trish

Thanks for that but as you can see from my reply to Margaret I'm now looking to go back one generation to Emmanuel's parents. Anything you've got on them would be good.

Thanks Margaret. Unfortunately none of those dates will fit Emmanuel's parents. Emmanuel was born around 1797 so his parents would need to have been married around 1795 and born around 1775 give or take 10 years.

Looks like I'll have to give up the search for the moment

Late to the party here, sorry, but interesting to see Emmanuel Kisby come up here! Are you a descendant of Emmanuel and Jane, Spencer?

Having studied the Kisbys in Whittlesey and Coates for over 20 years, my hunch is Emmanuel's parents may be John and Ann Kisby, who baptised a son Levi Kisby on 20 Oct 1799 in St Mary's Church, Whittlesey. I have never found a baptism record for Emmanuel, but maybe John and Ann had moved into the area? Levi named his first son John, his second son Robert (after the in-law) and his third son Emanuel.

A burial of a John Kisby is recorded in Whittlesey in 1802 and a burial of an Ann Kisby, widow, is recorded in 1804. These may be the same John and Ann, but the priest at St Mary's church wasn't exactly generous with his information in that period, so difficult to conclusively prove.

There was also a William Kisby, born circa 1795, living with his family in the area at the time of the 1841 census. His first three sons were named John, William and Levi. Possibly (but no proof) William was another brother of Levi (1799) and therefore a son of John/Ann. I believe William and family emigrated to Illinois, USA in the 1840s - coincidentally (or maybe not) Levi (1799)'s children Emanuel, Levi and Sarah emigrated to Illinois in the early 1850s. Perhaps they were following their uncle William, who knows?

Anyway, hope that helps somewhat.
