Bastardy bonds for Leicestershire
« on: Sunday 28 April 19 09:09 BST (UK) »
George MILES was noted as illegitimate although not using that term.
 A related post at https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=812005.0

I am hoping to get some idea of his father and wonder if there were Bastardy bond/s for George and if so where might these be located??

George & Mary Ann WAIN [who was baptised in 1829] married 20 Nov 1849.

The website of Leicestershire Records Office mentions Bastardy Bonds. Although it is not possible to see actual names. Might be worth a email or phone call.

If you can't find anything about George, you might try his siblings.

If you look at the 1841 census, Ann's first son is Henry, baptised as Miles on 8th February 1825.
Also Ann on 11th June 1827.

The other two don't seem to have been baptised.

Henry Bonsell Male 50 1791 Tailor Leicestershire
Ann Bonsell Female 40 1801 Leicestershire
Henry Miles Bonsell Male 15 1826 Leicestershire
George Miles Bonsell Male 10 1831 Leicestershire
James Miles Bonsell Male 8 1833 Leicestershire

1851 Census - Lichfield Street, Market Bosworth
Ann Bonsell Head Widow 50 1801 Charwoman b Polesworth, Warwickshire
James Bonsell Son Unmarried 18 1833 Labourer Mkt Bosworth
Henry Miles Head 26 1825 Labourer b Mkt Bosworth
Susannah Miles Wife 23 1828 Wife b Earl Shilton,
Henry Miles Son 0 1851 At Home b Mkt Bosworth

Henry married Susannah Wright in Kirkby Mallory on 18th February 1850
No father for either. Witnesses Ann Miles and Thomas Martin.

I have the Leicestershire Bastardy Indictments CD 1681-1838 and there is nothing listed for Ann Miles.

The only Miles around that timeframe is Mary Miles of Croft in 1821.

I was wondering what happened to James Miles Bonsell and whether there might be a clue to his father.

Eventually, I found him and his marriage but with a variation to his surname.

1861 Census
57, Navigation Street, St Margaret's, Leicester
James Banser Head 28 1833 Gas Maker b Market Bosworth, Leicestershire
Ann Banser Wife 29 1832 House Work b Leicester
Sarah Banser Daughter 5 1856 Scholar b Leicester

Mother
Alma Cottages, 5, Sanvy Gate, St Margaret's, Leicester
Ann Bonsal Head Widow 50 1811 Seamer Of Hose b Polesworth, Warwickshire

His marriage under another variation
4th June 1854 at St Margaret's
James Bonser (signed as that), 21, of Sanvey Gate, brickmaker, son of Henry Bonser, Tailor, to
Ann Matthews, 23, of Thames Street, daughter of William Matthews, Bricklayer.
Witnesses - George Bonser (X) and Matilda Rawson (x)

1871 Census
New Vauxhall Terrace, Aston, Warwickshire
James Bonsell Head 44 1827 Labourer in Gas Works- b Leicestershire
Ann Bonsell Wife 45 1826 - b Leicestershire
Sarah A Bonsell Daughter 16 1855 Shoe Maker - b Leicestershire
Ann Bonsell Mother 65 1806 - b Warwickshire

Given that Henry Bonsell, Tailor, was living with the family in 1841, he could be the father of James, although not married to Ann. However, it could just be that he thought of him as his father.

Henry Bonsell, b 1784, was buried in Market Bosworth on 27th July 1849.

Sarah Ann Bonsell married William Judge on 3rd June 1872 in Aston juxta Birmingham.

1881 Census with a few transcription errors
Duddeston Mill Road, 6, New Vauxhall Terrace, Aston, Warwickshire
James Bones Head 47 1834 Gas Stoker b Leicestershire
Ann Bones Wife 55 1826 - b Leicester
Ann Bones Mother Widow 72 1809 - b India
Rose Boddy Adopted Child 14 1867 Tin ? b Birmingham, Warwickshire

Hello David,

Thanks so much for your ongoing efforts on my behalf.

Coincidence or not? You note below that Henry Bonser was a Tailor.

One of Richard WAIN & Rebecca VESTY' other children, Joseph WAIN also became a Tailor.  Did he and George MILES apprentice together or were apprenticed to the same Master?  Is this how Mary Ann WAIN met George MILES [through her brother Joseph]?

Joseph WAIN became a Master Tailor and was listed in the 1901 census as such.
