Looking for Henry Edward Brookes b. c 1822
« on: Monday 29 April 19 06:28 BST (UK) »
We are looking for information about Henry Edward Brookes, who emigrated from England to South Australia in 1840 aboard the FAIRLIE. His occupation was listed as groom. He was born in about 1822.  Some believe he was born in Bath, Somerset, but that is not definite. Likewise we think his mother's name may have been Mary.  Any information would be appreciated about his family in the UK.  We have a lot of information about him and his family in Australia, but almost none about his origins.

There's a possible baptism in Abergavenny: Henry Edward Brookes, baptised 22 July 1821, son of Mary Brookes, a single woman, Monk Street.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, this is my relative, Selina Mugg was my GGG aunt.  She and Henry were married on 26 Dec 1843 in St John's Church in Adelaide, South Australia. Both were listed as single.  No ages are listed, but Selina would have been 17 years 10 months old. No family members are listed but I know that her father was Thomas Mugg and her mother was Elizabeth Woollacott - my GGG grandparents.  Thomas and Elizabeth and their 7 children emigrated from London aboard the PLANTER in 1839. They have many descendants here in Adelaide and beyond.  I can provide further information to anyone who is interested.

Thank you Shaun J. Yes, we found this record and I personally think it could be our man. We cannot find any other record that matches him. Whether his mother lived in Abergavenny or was sent there temporarily makes finding her even more complicated.  She may have returned to Bath and/or baby Henry may have been adopted or raised  by someone who lived in Bath, leading to the belief that he was born there.

Hi,

The 1851 South Australian Almanac and Directory has a Henry BROOKES as a Messenger and Crier for the Supreme Court on L80 per year.

There is a mention of Henry E BROOKES as the Superintendent of Public Cemeteries in the 1865 South Australian Almanac and Directory.

Ditto for 1876.

Ditto for 1881.

Gerry

Thank you Aussie1947. Yes, that is our Henry. He had a long career in the SA Public Service and was awarded the Imperial Service Order.

I see that he was recorded as a groom in his emigration application but Per his obit he carried letters of introduction from Colonel William Napier to Governor Gawler and others, and was immediately employed in the Civil Service. Not bad for a groom! One wonders about Colonel Napier's interest in him.

Excellent point Shaun!  Thanks again!
I have not actually seen his emigration application. Are you able to send me a link?

Sue.
