1911 census Front Street Annitsford.
« on: Monday 29 April 19 19:31 BST (UK) »
Hi.

I am usually able to look at the enumerator's description when trying to pinpoint an address in the censuses.

I'm not having any luck with the 1911 census however.

I am looking to find where Front Street Annitsford Dudley would be (or even still is).

I have cycled passed several times to try to pinpoint where it would be - the only address I can see that would be a 'front street' seems to be Bridge Street/Road alongside the A189.

Thank you.

Front Street, Annitsford is named on this 1919 map  https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/426995/574079/12/101116 change the zoom level if necessary.

Also https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17&lat=55.0621&lon=-1.5788&layers=168&right=BingHyb  although Front Street is not named.

Hello thank you to you three for your replies.  I am still not sure.

My great uncle in law is the head of the household and the address also includes some building or small area called Coates Building which seems to be next to Lee Building.  I tried looking for that first, but no joy.  I usually have no problems using the Enumerator's description but the Ancestry site has not given it for this set of  buildings.

I think the old maps option seems the closest - back out on my push bike and I'll have another cycle around there.

Front Street was quite a short street on the basis of the maps I have looked at, it seems it ran only from the railway level crossing northwards to Mill Lane. Pre 1900 maps show the village as very small, but the village began to grow about 1900. By 1914 additional streets such as Lee Street, Jackson Street and Jubilee Terrace had been built along with a Miner's Home to the north of those streets.

The old village is long since gone, and 'new' houses have been built on the sites of the disappeared streets, however it is possible to say that Front Street as was is still the B1505 and modern maps name it as Front Street. The Seaton Burn helps locate the southern limit of Annitsford as was, and Mill Lane is extant. Front Street runs nothward between those two points. Sadly nothing is left besides the original road.

This maps helps a lot and is zoomable.

The street names Lee Street and Jubilee Court survive but they are not where the original streets lay.

I hope that helps.

If you look at the map in the link I gave, Reply #3, you can see the old houses and the present houses, you can also pan and zoom, and directly compare locations
