Abercromby District Liverpool
« on: Monday 06 May 19 14:38 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone -- I am about to show my ignorance now, but a family I am researching lived in Abercromby, Liverpool (Russell Street) in 1881. According to the census page this fell into St David's Parish.

The only information I seem to be able to find about this area is an 'Abercromby Square'.

Does anyone know please, whether this area still exists other than the 'Square'.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Abercromby was a ward in central Liverpool. I'm not sure quite what you mean by "still exists" -  Russell Street still exists but has been bulldozed and redeveloped. It's about half a mile from Abercromby Square https://tinyurl.com/y26xpp7g

Abercromby was a ward, a parish and a sub-district of Liverpool, over varying years and with varying boundaries.

Thank you Shaun and Jackson.

I had actually looked on Google maps but never thought of doing the 'from' and 'to' bit! I am grateful that you thought of it.

When I said 'still exists' -- I am doing my brother in law's family tree and was hoping to insert some background to the District of Abercromby -- which I had never heard of in Liverpool -- and also hoping to find old pictures of this District in the past. I notice you both say 'was a Ward'.

When I could only find 'Abercromby Square' (and clearly Russell Street wasn't as it must have been in the 1800s) -- I just wondered if Abercromby, as a whole District had been demolished and just the square remained.

Thank you for your help - I appreciate it.

Yes, it's no longer a ward. It was fairly recently though.
From Wikipedia ...
"Abercromby ward was an electoral division of Liverpool City Council. It was originally created in 1835, was merged with St James ward in 1974 and was resurrected in 1980. Finally it was divided into the new Riverside and Princes Park wards in 2004."

You can see on this map, it was where Nos. 21 and 22 on the map are now - quite extensive area.

There are still many, many beautiful old buildings in the area that was Abercromby ward!
Just a short stroll from Abercromby Square is the Georgian Quarter - so called because of the architecture. Take a look on street view and you'll see.

This is a list of the roads within Abercromby ward, as was.

Aah -- right Jackson, thank you for that.

Yes it was large -- but number 23 Speke/Garston looks huge (which has nothing to do with my query -- just an observation!).

Abercromby certainly covered a lot of thoroughfares.

I agree there are some wonderful buildings in Liverpool. In my younger days I attended several work related courses there and was really surprised how impressive many buildings were.

Here is a link to map with Russell Street, look for Station, this is Lime St Station then to the back of it. It's not fat from WorkHouse on Bronwlow Hill.

Thank you so much Jean for going to that trouble -- very kind of you.

I have been looking at images and reading the history of Abercromby Square - just out of interest. Lovely houses.

The rules put in place by the Council to the Developers were fairly strict -- including ' No premises were to be used for carrying on any offensive trades.' (That one made me laugh.)

If you are interested and haven't seen it --- the history of the square can be found here;
