frederick fox mystery
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 10:35 BST (UK) »
i have been given some old war medals from my wife's family, they are from her great grand father or great great grandfather, who unfortunately share the same name.
one is Frederick c Fox born 1873
other is Frederick Fox born 1894

I have a few medals with f fox on them but some have different regiment numbers
some have 4852597 (Leicester rgt)
some have 29570 (Highland light infantry)
i have looked on forces war records but the info on there doesn't help with allocating the medals to one particular Freddy or give me much info on their war history.
can anybody help ?
thanks
Craig

29570 are Corporal Frederick Fox Highland Light Infantry in the Great War - there should be two, the British War and Victory.

The other number is a WW2 (or at least post 1920) number so those medals should be WW2.

Check them out on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_campaign_medals

4852597 is F Fox born 22 January 1893. His records are still with MoD so you can apply for a copy (£30).

cool thank you, could it safe to assume that fred born 1873 would have been too old, and maybe fred born 1894 was both of these rgt numbers ??

Yes although the date of birth given in the snippet of the record that ShaunJ posted (with the Leicestershire Regiment number) has a date of birth of 22 January 1893. (I assume that 1894 is a census derived date).
