Will of Elizabeth Coket 1520 - in English
« on: Sunday 19 May 19 18:03 BST (UK) »
Whilst this will is in English I am finding it very difficult to read, I can generally 'tune in' but this one is tough (to me).

Edited highlights are enough, ie, names, relationships, places, date of will, date of probate, etc.

Apart from seeing Elizabeth Coket widow of Bury St Edmunds at the beginning I cannot see another name on page 1

Top of page 2 mentions Elizabeth & John Coket - are they grandchildren?

8 lines down Rob[er]t Coket my son

Help with what I cannot read really appreciated

thanks

I agree it’s a quirky hand. There are no bequests to named individuals, other than the executors.

8 June 1518
Elizabeth Coket of Bury St Edmunds, widow, whole in mind, good remembrance; soul to God, etc.; to be buried in the churchyard of St Mary, near my friends; revoking all earlier wills etc.
Bequests to the church of St Mary for tithes forgotten, etc.; to a priest to pray for my soul and that of my husband John Coket, and of others; for repairing the church at Anwick etc.
Residuary estate to executors – Sir Robert Coket my son, Thomas Bromwich
Witnesses – Master Robert Stylyard, clerk; Master Edward Tasburgh, clerk; Sir Robert Mathew, chaplain; John Hamond, John Banyard, John Lacy[?], others
Proved 10 June 1520, administration to Thomas Bromwich; power reserved to lord Robert Coket, the son

I cannot find anything about Sir or Lord Robert Coket, shame as he could be a key individual

In the English text he is s(ir); and in the Latin he is d(omi)no.

Both of these titles can be applied to ecclesiastics.  Given what we have seen of the family so far, it's likely he was a clergyman.

Thanks, this is the will of Robert Coket Priest of Bury St Edmunds but dated 1518. If someone can extract the edited highlights from this I think it probably fits as I can see Elizabeth Cokett my mother in the middle.
