Bowling Alley, Basildon, 1851
« on: Monday 20 May 19 06:38 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

In 1851 John Albury, a baker and grocer lived with his family in Bowling Avenue.
Can a person who knows this area give me some idea of where to look on a modern map for this road/street?

Thank you

"walk" the census pages. Go back/forward until you reach a street that you can recognise

It appears to be in locality of RG8 8NA

Census returns are subdivided into Piece, Folio and Page.
Page 1 of each Folio usually contains the enumerators details of his/her area.

So worth checking page 1 ;D

Thank You to you too KGarrad

My original question was wrong (I think).
Bowling Alley is probably an area/suburb/district/neighbourhood - I had said road/street.

I had hoped that a person who knew Berkshire/Basildon would be able to describe the area. The Berkshire Family History Society https://www.berksfhs.org.uk/ says that it is a local place name in Basildon.

It really does not matter. My question was of no importance.
Regards
Jean

The 1851 address was Bowling ALLEY, not Avenue.

I wouldn't have been at all surprised if it was next to the pub.
Bowling alley(s) connected to the pub are not that uncommon in the region.

In the West of England (where I am from) it would probably have been called a Skittle Alley ;D
Still a major pub sport in Bristol and Somerset and surrounding areas.

So, I agree with PaulineJ - almost certainly next to a pub.

I have dug such a big hole for myself that I think I will now scuttle away into the darkness.

Apologies for wasting your time. I will also practise my reading skills.

Don't fret it.
