Help please - getting a 1995 death certificate from Spain

For legal reasons a friend needs to obtain the death certificate of a relative who died in Spain in 1995. She's tried ringing various numbers in Spain but met the language barrier. Apparently the person was brought back to be buried in the UK.
Would the death be registered with GRO so my friend could get a cert from them? Or can any kind soul suggest the next step to take please? I'm going to suggest email the British Consulate but wondered if there was a quicker way?

Rosie99 - thank you for reply, I don't have a sub to FindMyPast any longer but maybe the index is free, I'll check. I knew there must be some record somewhere but have gone a bit blank    thanks again

I just tried the index but no results found as yet. Going out now but will check back later in case I misread something.
