Name Puzzle - Nem?
« on: Monday 03 June 19 17:11 BST (UK) »
I have recently come across a christening on FamilySearch and I'm puzzled by the first name:

Name: Nem Blundall
Female
Christened 6 October 1583
Parish Fittleworth, Sussex
Father: James Blundall

The name also appears transcribed as "Nem" on Findmypast as well. Does anyone know what Nem might be short for or if it is a variation of something?

Thanks

Matt

Closest name I can think of might be Nahum (a biblical prophet).  Remember Nahum Tate, hymn writer, 1652-1715.
Thinking about it, neither Nahum nor Nehemiah is a female name.  Perhaps a pet version of Emma or Emily ?

Trouble is, it's a girl (see original post).

The entry can be found on FamilySearch, with a link to the image - it doesn't go straight there, but I think it was about no.16. It says 'daughter', or however they spelled it then. Unfortunately the image isn't the best quality, and it's a bit faint at the crucial place.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

There was an earlier child called Hellena (FindMyPast transcription). If she died the one you are looking at could be Nell?
