Mouat/Mowat of Wick
« on: Tuesday 04 June 19 03:37 BST (UK) »
Another Mowat I am looking for.
George Mowat married Katherine Dunnet on the 29 July 1777 at Caithness, father of George is Donald according to marriage details.

I found a baptism for George dated 29 Sep 1752 at Wick and father is Donald, no mother is stated. Also another possible brother to George is a William dated 8 Aug 1747 at Wick.

Just looking for any other possible family members, and who Was Donald Mowat's wife?  I just can't seem to find a marriage for Donald around that time frame, only those two baptisms.

Thanks

Thank You.
I have two conflicting marriage's with the same names.  Could it be possible? Both marriages in Caithness.
Excuse spelling, just posted as it appears.

05/11/1786   father name (MOWAT   DONALD)   GEORGE  MOWAT/KATHARINE DUNNET   M   Canisbay   /CAITHNESS   035/ 0010 0245

Name   Catharine Dunnet
Spouse   George Mouat
Marriage   29 Jul 1777 Canisbay,Caithness,Scotland

As the 1777 marriage fits better with births.

Name   Elspet Mouat
Gender   Female
Christening Date   20 Jun 1778
Christening Place   CANISBAY,CAITHNESS,SCOTLAND
Birth Date   14 Jun 1778
Father's Name   George Mouat
Mother's Name   Catharine Dunnet

First name(s)   Peter
Last name   Mowat
Gender   Male
Birth year   1780
Birth place   -
Baptism year   1780
Baptism date   06 Jul 1780
Baptism place   CANISBAY,CAITHNESS,SCOTLAND
Father's first name(s)   George
Father's last name   Mowat
Mother's first name(s)   Kathrine
Mother's last name   Dunnet

First name(s)   Donald
Last name   Mowat
Gender   Male
Birth year   1786
Birth place   -
Baptism year   1786
Baptism date   05 Nov 1786
Baptism place   CANISBAY,CAITHNESS,SCOTLAND
Father's first name(s)   George
Father's last name   Mowat
Mother's first name(s)   Katharine
Mother's last name   Dunnet

And their son Donald born 1786 Canisbay
1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
Ditch of Mey, Canisbay, Caithness, Scotland

Donald   Mowat   Male           55   1786   Caithness, Scotland
Caithrine   Mowat (Calder)   Female   55   1786   Caithness, Scotland
Caithrine   Mowat   Female   20   1821   Caithness, Scotland
Elizabeth   Mowat   Female   14   1827   Caithness, Scotland

The surname does swap around from Mouat to Mowat a number of times, then finally settles on Mowat.
Yes I did check with Scotland's People, they don't seem to have the details above.

That name of Elspeth certainly will fit into the daughters name sake of 1778, that could be a strong lead thank you.

Hi Suzy, I found a baptism for a George Mowat, on S P, at Canisbay 15/09/ 1748 father Peter Mowat  mother Helen C, as George and Catharine had a son in  1780 and named him Peter I wonder if this could be your George. I then found a marriage for Peter Mowat and Helin Cogil at Canisbay -/ 01/ 1748. . there is a marriage for George Mouat in 1786 at Canisbay but his bride is Euphemia Miller, both abodes Brabster.  Nikitah

Amazing how many Mowat/Mouats in Caithness at the time, probably are all related somehow, and does not make life easy for generations down the track hunting for them.
There is a book written on them and the connections to Freswick Castle etc, it is presumed the family came from Greenland before Scotland, that might explain my DNA test. ;)
I guess I am lucky to get this far with the records, there seems to be so many possible links.

Thanks for your help

you are right my Mowat's are said to have been in the clearances, I have been unable to get back further so I'm stuck in Strathnaver, but it's been an interesting journey thus far, I hope you have more luck , Nikitah
