John J Carter 1873 from North Kensington area
« on: Monday 10 June 19 18:14 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm trying to trace John J Carter.... I found him on 1960's electoral with my great grandma and their marriage certificate from 1919. But census after 1911 are not available so it is difficult to find out his birthplace.

On marriage certificate 1919 -

John Carter - 39 yo - widower - 16 olaf street - father is John Carter
Annie M Prince - 39 yo - widow - 16 olaf street - father Mathias O'Connor
Married in Hammersmith

Then on 1939 register list for 16 olaf street, I found that John Carter was born 1873 which is a slightly different to his age on marriage certificate but same address!? Annie's birth is correct on this list....

On 1964 Electoral list - his name was John J Carter....

So I search John J Carter 1873 and found "John J Carter" born in West Norwood/Lambeth...
The record for John J Carter in Lambeth - his parents was John William E Carter and Caroline Jane Percival - they married 19871 in Lambeth and their son John was born June quarter 1872 and his full name John Joseph William Carter...

Could this be the right guy? I'm just bit lost as the birth date is wrong three times and I noticed other trees that showed his death in 1937 when I know he died around 1964 in Kensington but could not find his death...

He was in the army.. Royal Horse Artillery - Corporal

I think you may be confused with the 1964 electoral register - Are you sure that the J that shows against his name is not J for juror ie meaning he is available for Jury service.  This is normally in a darker ink.  I am assuming this as I don't know where you have him then

The 1939 has him as John only.

Have you looked for him on the 1881 census as freebmd has 8 birth entries in the Dec qtr 1873 - none in London.  What is his fathers occ on the 1919 marriage cert?

1873 - 1964 means he was about 93 when he died

it shows John J Carter on electoral list under st ann's road. It won't let me upload a screenshot of his electoral list for some reason. Look for number 1605 on this link - https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interactive/1795/40020_611411_1294-00093/227193989?backurl=https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/102546884/person/382101434937/facts/citation/1062143523745/edit/record

about 90 - 91... 1873 - 1964

I couldn't find him without his birthplace... I will check on freebmd again

On 1939 register list he birth date was 18 Oct 1873 but name is John Carter.

On marriage cert - his father's name was John Carter already deceased and was labourer

What actual proof do you have that he died in 1964 eg - death cert?

2 children born 1920 and 1923 in Hammersmith when Annie was 42 and 45 yrs old.  Does that tie in with the info you have?

John P Carter was my grandfather - he was born in 1923, Daisy would be 1920... They has 18 children in total from previous marriage as well.

My aunt said he died not long before Annie and Annie died in 1964. Both their names disappeared from St Ann's Road list in 1965.

Annie m Carter's death record is 1964 but have mentioned in my original post that I couldn't find his death record.

My mother was born in St Ann's road at number 114... Said her grandparents lives in 118 so know it is definitely them.

Of the 18 children from the 2 previous marriages - do you know the names/birthdates of any from John's first marriage?

Just Annie's... It says he was 39 on 1919 marriage certificate... Living at 16 Olaf Street... Which means he should be born around 1880.. Annie on the Cert says she was also 39 but her real birth date is 1878.

Then on 1939 register list for 16 Olaf Street, it says he was born in 1873...

Most of the children were Annie's....
