Weaver, worsted comber and cothier
« on: Monday 17 June 19 15:27 BST (UK) »
Just found out that a paternal great grandfather's occupation was a weaver, worsted comber and clothier. I know what a weaver is but what are the other two. I assume they are all related in some form or fashion.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

A comber operated a combing machine which separated the short fibres of wool from the long fibres.

A Clothier could be a Card Clothier or a Flat Clothier, according to a Dictionary of Occupational Terms. There is also a Secondhand Clothier.

Stan -

You are always wealth of information. Many thanks for the explanations. I assumed worsted comber had something to do with wool .. i.e. worsted wool suits for example. Wasn't too far off.

Having so many relatives in "fashion related" industries ... tailors, drapers, combers and clothiers ... still doesn't help me in my clothing choices.  ;) ;)
