Hanwell Lunatic Asylum
« on: Monday 17 June 19 19:54 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone out there who may know what happens to a baby born in the Asylum to an Inmate and where that baby's birth would be registered?  The date I am looking at is the end of 1900.  Many thanks.

Welcome to RootsChat
The law is that the birth has to be registered in the district in which the birth took place
Hanwell was in the Brentford Registration District.

The Hanwell Asylum, also known as the London County Lunatic Asylum, wasn't strictly in Hanwell but was in Norwood, Middlesex. After 1 June 1895, Norwood came under Uxbridge registration district.

Births are not indexed by individual date. If the birth was on the 29th December 1900, then it could have been registered in the Dec ¼ of 1900, or the March ¼ 1901. If you know the maiden name of the mother, then you can try searching using that at https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

The asylum had its own church quite a large grand one that still stands today as do several of the original buildings (now part of Ealing hospital) a new high security unit has been built on the edge of what was the grounds The Church Is at present just almost completed in turning it into  flats . asylums & work houses where strict in having the children baptised so a strong poss that your child would have been baptised there & I have been told the records are held at the l.m.a.
in London
