Jane WILLS
« on: Thursday 20 June 19 15:12 BST (UK) »
Jane Wills m Luke BUNTER on 20 Feb 1722 in Mylor; who was she?
I have found 2 possibilities in Mylor:-

1. Jane WILLS bap 25 Aug 1708 to William and Mary

2. Jane WILLS bap 02 Apr 1695 to Andrew and Jane

I believe that Jane's first child (Luke) was baptized in Mylor on 30 Jan 1723, followed by

William on 14 Jan 1727 in St Gluvias

Jane on 17 Aug 1730 in St Gluvias

James on 25 Aug 1735 in Mylor

Despite the fact this means that no.1 above would have been only 14 on her marriage, the naming of  her second son after her father makes her 'favourite'. Can anyone claim either of these ladies or otherwise help me decide?

Given that baptisms did not always happen soon after birth, the 1708 baptism is not impossible.  It could be worth checking to see if William and Mary had other children - if you can find a marriage date and a regular pattern of baptisms - or if there are long gaps followed by multiple baptisms.

My other thought is: did either of the Janes die young, or did a Jane WILLS marry before 1722 - this could eliminate Jane daughter of Andrew and Jane, or leave her as the "front runner".

Family Search note the record of Jane Wills at MYLOR as the date of birth 25 Aug 1708, although some consider these records as not always accurate.

I note that there is one other record for a Jane on family search and two more on Freereg, all in Cornwall but distant from Mylor.

However it was not until 1763 that the minimum age of marriage was fixed at 16. Prior to this date, the church accepted the marriage of girls aged 12 or more and boys aged 14 or more. In addition, a dispensation on licence could be obtained from a bishop, which allowed marriage at a younger age.

dates of baptisms are correct when compared to parish register

Nothing in the register to suggest that this isn't an infant baptism

As suggested, I've searched for other offspring from the marriage of William WILLS and Mary ????, but with no luck. I've also searched for their marriage and found 3 (very distant) possibilities:-

1. 1 Dec 1705 Wm WILLS to Mary CHAPEL in Lanteglos-by-Camelford (34m to Mylor)

2. 25 Feb 1706 Wm WILLS to Mary HOOPER in Bradoc (28m to Mylor)

3. ?? ??? 1700 Mr Wm WILLS to Mrs Mary R??? in St Ives (20m to Mylor)

I've used Family Search, Cornwall OPC, FindMyPast and FreeReg

Any of these could be Jane's parents.

Concerning the absence of any further WILLS offspring, there are burial record for Mary WILLS:-

1. 29 Jan 1706 in Braddock

2. 01 Dec 1710 in Lanteglos-by-Camelford

3. 09 Nov 1715 in Lanteglos-by-Camelford

4. 06 Dec 1716 in St Gluvias (dr of Mr John & Mrs Mary)

This last was , presumably, an infant, so definitely not the mother of Jane.

The Braddock burial took place a month before the marriage of Mary HOOPER, so cannot refer to her. Probably, one of the Lanteglos burials is that of Mary nee CHAPEL, which, if she was Jane's mother, would explain the absence of further offspring.

All very interesting, but is my research any further advanced?

Many thanks to all who've contributed to my quest. I'm most grateful for all your factual input, help and advice.

On the balance of probabilities, I'm going to run with the Jane of 1708, and see where she leads me.

Thanks again.
