Samson Marshall born in Llandogo 1841
« on: Wednesday 26 June 19 07:02 BST (UK) »
The 1841 baptism of Samson Marshall at St Dochoe, Llandogo ,Monmouthshire, parents James and Catherine  is the only record I can find.
Help with information on other records would be appreciated.

If he is not with parents in 1851 it's likely he died in infancy

I note on family search there are a number of births in the 1870s both in the North of England and the London area, father Samson Marshall, might be worth a further look.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

I can find no record of registration of birth of Sampson on FreeBMD.

Names of James Marshall and Catherine Hyde only two on page Sep 1837 Monmouth.
From GRO Index. Ann, Mar 1838, Sarah Sep 1839. Both registered Monmouth. Mmn Hyde.
Both with Catherine in Llandogo in 1841. No sign of any other children.

Un-named Male child Marshall born Crickhowell Dec 1840. Mmn Herbert.

It was not until 1874 that it became compulsory to register a birth.

It is possible that Sampson was a sickly baby and not expected to survive. His parents may have given priority to his baptism to secure his place in the after life.( Was it a private baptism?) After his presumed early death there would appear, to them,  little point in registering his birth. Perhaps you should be looking for his burial record in the Parish Register.

Just a thought.

There is a tree on Ancestry showing his DoB as 29.8.1841  Llandogo but no death date for him.

Note poster spells name as Samson - not Sampson

Parents on 1851 census but no son Samson.  Nearest is a 9yr old son James

Thank you for your replies
My thoughts have moved towards the idea that Samson became James.
I have seven children listed for the family of James c 1810 and the dates of birth although approximate in the case of a James born c 1842, he and Samson are side by side.
Neither James or Samson were registered, Samson was baptised but a James is not in baptism list for St Dochoe, Llandogo.
I often pat myself on the back when I have an idea. Is this a good one?

Have you found baptisms for all other children except James?  If so - the name change is a possibility.

Was Samson baptised 29.8.1841 as the tree shows that as his birthdate?

If it was his baptismal date he could have been born anytime beforehand making him older.

1841 shows a 1yr old daughter Sarah - do you have her baptism?  Straw clutching time - Samson/Sarah - transcription error??
